Mphothwe appointed Ambassador to Nigeria

Director of Public Relations, Research and Information Department in the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation, Pule Mphothwe has been appointed Botswana’s Ambassador to Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria,

He takes over from Lieutenant General Matshwenyego Fisher who is currently Botswana’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe. Mphothwe boasts over 25 years of chequered international and diplomatic service experience, which began in 1992 as Foreign Affairs officer in the Foreign Ministry.

He rose through the ranks acquitting himself in versatile assignments among them, Third Secretary at the Embassy of Botswana in China from 1994-96 to First Secretary (1999-2001).  It was during this time that he amassed what he describes as “conversational knowledge” of Chinese language –Mandarin. He would later take up the position of First Secretary at Botswana High Commission in Namibia from 2001 – 2004 before returning home for a two-year stint as assistant director, Public Relations, Research and Information. 

He has been Counsellor/Head of Chancery at Botswana High Commission, India and Deputy Director, Multilateral Affairs Department, in the Foreign Ministry and was Deputy Ambassador, Botswana Embassy, Japan from 2010 until 2016, sometimes acting as Ambassador. 

 Mphothwe holds Masters Business Administration (MBA) from Globis University, Tokyo, Japan, and MA (International Studies & Diplomacy) from University of London, UK.  He is married and has two daughters
