Masilo guilty of Murder
Judge Abednigo Tafa this afternoon found Thabo Masilo guilty of the murder of Tshepang Motlhabane. He however found him not guilty of robbery. The ruling comes following a six-year trial over the murder of the former St Joseph's College student who was stabbed to death at her family home in Phase 4, Gaborone.
After reading out the statements of 13 witnesses including security officers, police officers, a relative and forensic experts, Tafa noted that it was questionable that Masilo had acted in self defence as he had claimed in his defence.
"If he had indeed acted in self defence as he claims, he would not have stabbed the victim three times. He also would not have hidden from the security personnel." Tafa also noted that Masilo had confisticated two phones he found in a bedroom but did not state that the other one belonged to him.
Meanwhile, Masilo's lawyer Kgosi Ngakayagae has indicated that they will contest the ruling. An extenuation has been set for 7 February 2019 at Gaborone High Court.
Tshepang's mother, Freedom Diraditsile said that she was pleased with the ruling but declined to comment further. A family representative said that they had forgiven Masilo a long time ago but were happy that he had been found guilty of Tshepang's murder. Masilo's mother declined to comment and appeared fiery.
