Kgosi Malope II cracks the whip
Close to 100 young men and women who had been terrorising Kanye were brought before Paramount Kgosi Malope II last year December for some serious flogging at the main Kgotla.
Commonly known as Matsetsenkane or Menang, this is a group of angry and rebellious youth aged between 16 and 19, some of whom are doing Form 1 and 2 in junior secondary schools while majority are those that failed at senior school.
In an interview with The Midweek Sun this week, Kgosi Malope said he was happy that the situation has improved.
“I had no choice but to crack the whip hard between November and December,” said the chief, who follows in his late father Kgosi Seepapitso IV who did the same with a one time notorious group called Makgaola-7 in Kanye.
Matsetsenkane had planted their groups almost in every ward in Kanye, and extended to Jwaneng where they allegedly killed a young man who was coming from a night club last month.
Some of their recorded crimes from last year include gang raping a teenage girl from Goo-Ruele ward. She was said to be coming from a nightclub. They were reported to have forced a middle aged man from a bar, to dance naked, which he did.
They also took his wallet and cellphone. A woman from Logaba ward recounted how Menang once got her neighbour to drink his own urine whilst coming from a nightclub. They took turns beating him when he refused.
Last December, a member of the group went to his neighbour’s house and lied that his mother wanted to see the girl, only for his group of friends to attack her leaving her for dead. Meanwhile, Malope is appealing to parents to keep an eye on their children. “Discipline first starts from home,” he said.
