Jwaneng Bush walk attracts 800 people

Jwaneng mining town was the place to be on Saturday when over 800 people participated in the Desert Bush Walk, Winter 2016.

This bush walk, took place in an endeavour to raise funds towards sustainable educational projects as well as for the disadvantaged children in the Jwaneng area and beyond the district. Multitudes of Batswana and people from as far as South Africa braved the winter cold in an effort to support this initiative.

The walk had two categories that included 10 Km and 30 Km, both starting from Jwaneng, and joining a bush trail into the desert before returning back to the mining town. On the other hand, the event aimed to promote and brand Jwaneng and its surroundings as a tourism destination for both locals and foreigners, under the cultural and sports tourism portfolio.

One of the participants of the day told Midweek Sun that the initiative means a lot to the entire country, adding that she enjoyed the walk. “It was the first time I engaged in such a walk. I am happy because I also benefited a lot health wise. I look forward to another walk next year so that it makes a difference in some people’s lives,” she said. The first bush walk was in 2014, and the third one is expected to be on July 2017. The event is expected to take place annually.
