Germany to partner Botswana on solar energy

Government has been repeatedly urged to consider solar power as an alternative source of energy to that which is generated from fossil fuels to supplement electricity.

A German delegation currently in the country to explore investment and economic opportunities in the country, has availed itself to assist by partnering with Batswana on such projects.

German ambassador Rolf Ulrich said there is room to utilise the sun as a natural source of renewable energy considering that Botswana is a largely sunny country.

Ulrich is part of a delegation of photovolenic providers in the country to learn more about Botswana and seek partnerships in the energy sector.
A representative of the German Solar Association, Jorg Mayer, said solar is a cheaper source of renewable energy compared to fossil fuels, and cleaner too.

He noted that solar power would be more beneficial in rural areas where there are no power grids. Representative of the Solar Industry of Botswana association, Felix Chavapi listed a few stumbling blocks that government should look into if it is to grow the photovoltaics industry in Botswana.

“Government should look into reforms for rebates (policy change), improve assurance in quality and standards and also intensify customer education” He added that there should also be improved investment in skill development.
