Dineo unearths human remains in Sebina

Tropical storm “Dineo” which killed several people in Mozambique subsequently destroying roads and buildings in different parts of Botswana leaving other people without a roof over their heads, has apparently unearthed two human remains in Sebina Village.

Speaking to The Midweek Sun in an interview, Kgosi Shathani Kgakanyane said that the heavy rains have unearthed the human remains. “These people were unearthed by the heavy rains, nothing else,” Kgakanyane said. She also said that the old cemetery in which the two bodies were found was near the river.

She expressed concern that if the heavy rains continue more bodies in that cemetery will be unearthed while others may be washed away.

Though she could not be precise about how old the cemetery was, she said the remains are of old people. “I do not know how old the cemetery is but it must be from way back because the bodies were covered with blankets,” Kgakanyane said adding that in the pre-independence era, people buried their dead using blankets instead of coffins.

The Chief further said that the two bodies will be reburied at the new cemetery. They also intend to engage the council to give them land so that they can move other bodies from the old cemetery.

“Our fear is that these bodies may be washed away by the water because the river was far from the cemetery but it has since widened with the passing of years,” she added.
