Diamond Divas help girls find purpose in life
As girls navigate adolescence, they face the challenge of moving through physical, psychological, sexual, and emotional development with a healthy sense of self -intact.
A mentor at this stage in a girl’s life can have a broad impact on her successfully navigating the years to adulthood. They can encourage one to stretch oneself outside one’s comfort zones and help one realise that the world is much broader and more diverse than our little corners of it,” said Rorisang Mogojwe.
The 26-year old journalist and co-founder of Diamond Divas says the inspiration to start the organisation came from coming across many young women and girls who seemed lost and unambitious. This, she says is particularly acute among girls in low-income communities, who have few role models in their own networks.” If you can't see any woman doing a job you aspire to, then it's very difficult to believe that you can get there yourself,” said Mogojwe who hails from Gabane.
This made her think of the many mentors like her mother, Leloba Seitshiro and Tumie Ramsden and the profound impact that they have had in my life and caused me to reflect on why female mentors are particularly important to girls and young women today,” she said. The not-for-profit organisation is aimed at providing a platform for young girls to access mentors who will inspire them to find their lifetime purpose in different aspects of life.
The organization targets girls between ages of 13 and 19 for monthly sessions chaired, by industry experts and celebrities with stories to inspire, empower and mentor the participants. Mogojwe said that mentor-mentee relationship provides a protected space for the adult woman and the girl/young woman to connect through shared experiences.
