Afro Pop star Eugene Jackson is born again

Gone are the days when Afro-Pop star Eugene Jackson used to wear dreadlocks. He is now spotting a shaved head, something he started when he got serious with the Lord in 2013.

While some people say he is now a pastor owning a church, the 34 year-old man says he is an evangelist. He shares the Word of God everywhere he goes and on social media. He is a member of Open Baptist Church in Gaborone. Jackson has been away in South Africa where he was studying music and only came back late last year. But one thing that makes him a happy man is his spirituality.

Though he grew up in church, the son of Jazz legend Clement Jackson, states that the world of fame nearly led him astray. “Even though I wasn’t into drugs, I was a heavy drinker,” he says. His friend Oneal of the Big Brother fame would then invite him to church in 2010 but he stopped going within a short period of time. Vee Mampeezy also invited him to church but it also did not work. He got to be revived when he got to South Africa and joined Kingdom Authority Bible church. “I believe we are spirit beings on human journey. It is God first then the rest,” he says.

He however warns locals to be alert when it comes to matters of faith saying they should stop running after visiting prophets and miracles. “We already have a Messiah in Jesus and no other Messiah will come. Stop running after pastors,” he says. Despite being a Christian, Jackson is still an Afro Pop musician at heart.

He believes that musicians should not make hasty decisions when they get born again, explaining that they will blame God when they fail. His new single ‘Caroline’ is currently enjoying massive airplay in the local radio stations. It is a prelude to his upcoming album, which has the best African producers from Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

His advice to young people is to encourage those who would want to be in the entertainment industry to think hard because ‘only one out of ten smiles are genuine.’ He says the industry is full of infighting.

His highlight has been sharing the stage with his father over the years. He says he also looks up to his mother for inspiration.
