African Court to train journalists on human rights reporting

The Midweek Sun’s Irene Shone, together with Mmegi’s Ulla Setswalo flew out of the country today for  the African Court Journalism training that begins tomorrow in Arusha Tanzania.

The two were the only Botswana reporters nominated for the training by the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) and they will be trained on human rights reporting for the rest of this week.

The training targets editors and journalists from Southern, Central, Western and Northern African regions, and two journalists were nominated from each of the participating countries among them Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Sao Tome Principe, Côte d’Ivore, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Sahrawi Republic and Tunisia.

Shone says that having been given such an opportunity means a lot to her as she believes that journalism has always chosen her as a young girl from high school. “I am really happy about this golden opportunity and being chosen amongst so many means quite a lot to me,” she said.
