UB suspends six protesting students

About three University of Botswana (UB) students out of the 121 identified by CCTV cameras during protests and demonstrations over monthly allowances earlier this year, have been slapped with suspension letters.

 Another three have been recommended for suspension and will soon follow suit. UB SRC President Bakotelo Moagisi confirmed to The Midweek Sun that the said students were given the letters last week Thursday. He also said that they were however given an option to appeal to the Vice Chancellor, which they have done.

He added that the students would continue to attend classes while they await a response from the Vice Chancellor. Moagasi said they will continue to support their colleagues until the crisis is resolved. “We are currently assisting them with their appeals to the Vice Chancellor and also to take the appeal to the Ministry of Tertiary Education. If we don’t get help, we will take it further to the Office of the President,” he said.

SRC Minister of Student Affairs Mpho Molokwane says most UB students still blame the Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF) for the disaster. “None of this would have happened if they had done their work diligently,” he said. He vowed that they would support their comrades come rain or sunshine. Classes have resumed as normal at the institution since last month.

There have not been any reported delays of monthly allowance payments since the infamous demonstrations and boycotts.
