The Deaf Community encouraged to interact
It has been established that deaf pupils learn and grow better in an environment where they can interact with other colleagues and the rest of the community on a daily basis.
This was said by the Assistant Minister of Health Dr Alfred Madigele at a fundraising dinner for the Botswana Society for the Deaf (BSD) recently. Madigele further applauded BSD for the impact that it has in the Deaf Community within the country. “In previous fund raising events such as this dinner, and from generous donations we have received over the years we have been able to raise funds towards building some hostel blocks and purchasing of bricks for the construction of a hostel at Ramotswa Centre for Deaf Education,” said Madigele.
He also indicated that the target for this year was to raise additional funds to build new hostel blocks for Standard One, Two and Three pupils. Madigele’s plea to the general public is to join hands in assisting them to build a brighter future for the deaf community. “We have realized that the Centre receives more enrolments of deaf pupils each year, and as a result issues of over-crowding in hostels pose a hazard to the children”, remarked Madigele. He added that this initiative would promote a conducive learning environment that provides for the social and psychological needs of the children.
