28 people die over the festive period
At least 28 people died in separate road accidents during the Christmas and New Year festive season specifically from 18th December 2015 to 3rd January 2016. Only 37 people died during the same period last year.
In one of the accidents which happened on New Year’s day an unidentified man was knocked to death by a motor vehicle near Morwa junction along A1 road. In another accident which also happened on New Year’s day near Moshupa, a 63-year-old man died after two vehicles collided head-on.
Two people died in another accident which happened on the 3rd January 2016 in Mahalape when a vehicle carrying seven passengers overturned. A total of 408 people died from 327 fatal road accidents recorded last year.
Acting Public Relations Officer, Dipheko Motube states that he is impressed by the manner in which Batswana were conducting themselves during the festive season; particularly in avoiding accidents.
He said that he believes that their words of advice and caution fell on the right ears as most people cooperated well even though there is room for improvement.
Motube adds that, “During this festive season we came up with strategies to curb road accidents and spread information to help people stay safe. We also partnered with road traffic associations to support us in our efforts against accidents.”
