Goaba goes after the ka-ching

 Still mum on BBC contract

Plans to get hitched to his sweetheart next year

It appears that now former Duma FM breakfast show host, Goaba Mojakgomo, became too expensive for the radio station and left the company, enticed by a fatter pay cheque. The Midweek Sun has established that the gregarious radio personality, who was cagey with details about his next move in an interview last week, will soon join BBC Radio where he will smile all the way to the bank with better remuneration.

Mojakgomo will be based in Gaborone and stream for the revered radio station, respected for its current affairs and well-researched programming. Although he has tried by all means to keep his lips sealed, those close to the matter have already let the cat out of the bag and insist that it is only a matter of time before he starts his new job. Before the BBC Radio talk emerged, there were indications that he could be venturing into a communications field with an undisclosed organisation, while he has also insisted he was simply going into business.

Mojakgomo held a farewell party at popular Gabs night-spot My Kind of Place (MKOP) this past Thursday. Several of his colleagues from Duma FM, friends, family, media, well wishers and fans, as well as community leaders including Gaborone Mayor Kagiso Thutlwe and South East District Council chairman and Tlokweng councillor, Phenyo Segokgo, joined other revellers to celebrate Mjakes’ illustrious radio career. Mojakgomo also recently posted pictures of himself on holiday, with a picture of him on a cruise boat captioned, ‘cruising into new beginnings, so determined, so focused.’ Omogolo Bonjo Mathumo, who has rebranded the ER show to Six-Ten Street, has since replaced Mojakgomo.

Mathumo previously hosted the drive time slot on the same radio station. However, he will have to work hard to endear to talk radio lovers as fans of Mojakgomo are seemingly not impressed with his presenting skills, with the common complaint being that he “lacks the energy for radio” while others have hailed him as a radio legend who will surely pick the baton from where the popular Mjakes left. Meanwhile, Mojakgomo is also speculated to be getting married sometime next year. In fact, some people anticipated that he would pop the question to his long-time girlfriend, RB2 presenter, Zanele Thato Bawe, at his party, following in the footsteps of Mayor Thutlwe who proposed to his fiancée at the same venue. In an interview, Mojakgomo said that while he would not divulge much for now, he actually does have plans of settling down. “Let me just say that something will happen next year,” he said shyly.
