International Information and Communication Technology (ICT) company, Huawei, recently donated 30 tablet hand held devices to Moshupa Senior Secondary School. The tablets were given away by Vice President Mokgweetsi Masisi last week. The tablets are expected to assist both teachers and students with daily learning activities.
Addressing the handing over ceremony, Masisi said the event was part of a build up to WTISD (World Telecommunication and Information Society Day) 2016 commemorations held at Thamaga village on Friday. This year, the WTISD’s theme was “ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact”.
Speaking at the donation ceremony, Masisi acknowledged the importance of the tablets donated by Huawei, noting that the company is making its own contribution to the development of education in Botswana.
He mentioned that ICT has become an important enabler for the development of industries including agriculture, tourism and mining. Masisi said it was his hope that the WTISD brings positive social impacts as needed and open up new windows for businesses at home. The Vice president added that the tablets donated will help both teachers and students so that they are more exposed to ICT as well as acquiring knowledge online and becoming innovative.
For his part, Minister of Transport and Communications, Tshenolo Mabeo sensitized the community on the application of ICT. The Minister thanked Huawei for the donations, which will help the teachers to do their research online, hence improve the learning outcome of the students.
Managing Director of Huawei Botswana, Ren Fujun said that Huawei has always focused on promoting the development of communities where they operate and they have always identified education as a priority. He added that Huawei makes every effort to bridge the digital divide through their expertise in the ICT sector.
