Moshupa's cable theft on the increase
Moshupa Police have appealed for more public support to tackle the surge in electricity cable theft in the village.
Moshupa Police Station Commander Superintendent Oneetse Gagogosha said stealing of electricity cables has become more pronounced in the area over the past couple of weeks.
“This past weekend alone we registered four cases,” he said in an interview. On average, Gagogosha said two to three incidents were reported per week, adding that it was hard to catch the culprits as there were no streetlights.Gagogosha however asked residents to remain vigilant and to have the courage to report suspicious characters to the police, whilst giving the assurance that everything was done to arrest the culprits and bring them to justice.
Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) safety manager, Joseph Phalalo has also called for stiffer penalties against power cable thieves. He said when cables are stolen, electricity supply is disrupted until they are replaced.“The disruption and the problems they cause are immense.'He advised customers to opt for underground cables as opposed to the overhead service cable.
