Khumoekae's disciplinary hearing on Friday
President of Botswana National Front Youth League (BNFYL), Richard Khumoekae has been called for a disciplinary hearing on Friday at 9 in the morning.
Earlier this month, Khumoekae rushed to the Gaborone High Court seeking to stop his disciplinary hearing instituted by Parliamentary Clerk Barbara Dithapo for allegedly engaging in political activism while a civil servant, contrary to Section 5 (5) of the Public Service Act.
When addressing court, Khumoekae’s lawyer Mboki Chilisa said the application raised two constitutional points - freedom of speech and association - which his client was being forced to choose from.
Justice Gaolapelwe Ketlogetswe dismissed the application saying Khumoekae’s complaint was that if he was to be put through the disciplinary hearing and was dismissed he would lose out on his employment benefits.
“This averment in my view does not touch on the loss of the enjoyment of the freedoms and rights he is seeking to protect, but rather on the financial loss he is likely to suffer should he opt to continue with his being active in politics at the expense of his job,” he said.
