Student riots persist at Botho University
Student riots continue to plaque Botho University main campus in Gaborone. The recent student demonstration took place on Monday afternoon. The student’s riots at Botho follows last month’s protests over book allowances and accreditation of courses offered by the institution.
Yesterday less than 20 Botho students blocked traffic within the campus and went to the extent of setting a tree on fire near the main campus. Reached for comment on the matter, Botho University Dean (Office of External Relations), Golekanye Setume expressed disappointment saying that they always put their students first, but now they do not understand why something like that could still continue.
“They are just attention seekers because we have fully addressed the issues that they complained about recently. What depresses is the fact that it is just a small number of students who causes anarchy now and it is even a criminal offence what they did.” said Setume.
“In an effort to control the situation, we have given out the rules to avoid unlawful gatherings within the university, because we have noticed that the groups always lead to something else,” Setume explained.
