Over 121 UB students to be investigated following recent riots

Over 121 University of Botswana (UB) are likely to be investigated by the Police over student riots that occurred at the high learning institution over a month ago. The institution was re-opened on Monday this week following violent student protests over late payment allowances

This week, the Student Representative Council Minister of Students Affairs at UB, Mpho Molokwane said almost 90 percent of students attended classes on Monday. “Everyone is happy to be back and we are all ready to continue with our studies. About 90 percent of students attended lessons today,” he said.

Moreover, Molokwane said it was business as usual as all the university refectories were also running, including the Shoppers supermarket, which was looted by students during the riots.

Molokwane further highlighted that they are happy students again after February allowance were paid on time. “Everyone of us had their allowances reporting on their phones at 7am this time around, and we are impressed because no one was left behind as compared to the previous situation.”.

However, Molokwane regretted that 121 students who have been identified by CCTV intruding UB facilities are likely to face charges. “They will have to be investigated by the police.

We still blame Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF), because if they have done their work without being reminded to, nothing of this sort would have occurred. However, as the SRC body we will see how such cases proceed because they are still our comrades,” he said.
