Grass roots chess receives major boost

Grace World Africa Foundation Trust (GWAF) will on the 24th November donate chess equipment to the Chobe region. The equipment will be shared between 10 primary and two junior schools in the region.

The Foundation trust has partnered with Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) in an endeavour to promote and grow chess within the Chobe Region. Speaking to this publication in an interview recently, the founder of the trust, Namasiku Samunzala said as GWAF, they decided to embark on a programme that will fully monitor and grow chess within the region and also the nation of Botswana at large.

Samunzala said GWAF is committed to impacting the life of young people by partnering with the government and other relevant stakeholders in holistic youth empowerment. In particular, they will be focusing on teenage mothers, children and all other issues of national and international importance. Still on that note, Tshwarelo Hosia, Private Secretary to the Assistant Minister of Basic Education is expected to officiate at the event on the day. Grace World Africa Foundation Trust is a charitable non-profit making organization, which was established on February 2013.

The trust is solely aimed at giving back to the community. Reached for comment, BCF President Mothokomedi Thabano said they appreciate the support from GWAF, saying it is only through the support of the community that they can bee able to develop talent in the country. Thabano explained that BCF has a mandate to develop talent from grassroots level and added that the donation came at the right time.

“We recently approached the Minister of Education Unity Dow, proposing that chess should form part of the school curriculum. Now with the assistance of the chess equipment, children will be able to play the game with much ease,” he said. He called upon the general community to continue supporting the game of chess as it helps sharpen the intellectual capacity of students.
