Bagwasi closes in on title shot

Three local professional boxers from the D Scud boxing stable are expected to compete in Mbabane, Swaziland next week Friday. The three boxers include Kabelo Bagwasi (60kg), Kutlwano Ogaketse (58.6 kg) and Tshepang Babui (56kg). The three will be competing in the Fox Africa Boxing season five following a similar event that was held in Gaborone, last year December. In an interview this week, D Scud headcoach Thuso ‘Scud missile’ Khubamang said preparation for the February 23rd event are going well.

“We are currently in camp. We never took a break since the last event held in Gaborone. We are currently focusing on improving power on all the three boxers,” Khubamang said. A former professional boxer in his own right Khubamang said he is doing a lot of pad work and bags with all the boxers. “They need to have a spark of power in their punches. Ogaketse and Bagwasi will be competing in six round bouts against South African opponents while Babui will be competing in a four rounder (against SA).” Moreover, Khubamang said the three athletes who are yet to taste defeat in the Fox Africa boxing series are quickly moving up the ranks.“

Bagwasi who currently commands three wins with no loss will be in the main supporting bout to the two WBA Pan African title fights. Bagwasi, a former national team member who has been sublime in the ring recently is close to earning himself a Pan African title shot.” In addition, Khubamang said all the three boxers are currently signed to Fox Africa. The South African promoters are said to be closely monitoring the performances of all the three boxers. “We are appealing to local companies and government to step in and assist young and upcoming pro boxers. You can see that professional boxing is quickly gaining traction in Botswana.” Meanwhile Fox Africa boxing has staged three big budget professional boxing events at the Grand Palm in Gaborone last year. The Swaziland event will be held at the Royal Swazi Spa resort.
