Maghebula tipped to floor Jojo at Northern Arts Award
Traditional music heavyweight artist Maghebula, who continues to shine in the local music industry, has been pitted against another thriving artist, Jojo in the Northern Arts Awards(NAA) traditional artist of the year gong. The awards ceremony is billed for Francistown in December 2017. Other artists who made the grade under the same category include, Tjilenje tje ngwao and Bana bana ba Ntogwa.
However, Maghebula seems a shoulder above the rest of his competitors, as he has continued to drop hit after hit without fail. His songs chronicle real life issues which will make him the favourite artists to walk away with the award. One of his recent songs Single mothers will give him advantage as it touches the core fibre of women on single parenthood.
His other satirical song ‘go raga ka lonao’ that references condomise is also popular and might boost his votes. Maghebula’s toughest contender will possibly be Jojo, who will boosted by her popularity in the showbiz through shows locally and internationally. As for songs, she has only dropped one album so far which boasted the hit song Mpatiseng. This song catapulted her to stardom several years ago.
Following the success of Mpatiseng, she has never dropped any other album except for the long awaited Borasitori which is yet to hit the market. Tjilenje tje ngwao and Bana bana ba Ntogwa are both competent in Kalanga traditional dance but they will be disadvantaged by the fact that they have no hits to speak of. The groups have won presidential awards but have failed to record studio hits to give their music credence.
