DJ ANTHEM AND SCAVENJA'S SONG MONYOPI, EARNS THEM ACCCLAIM
The pair of DJ Anthem and Scavenja is hot property at this very moment. In fact, for a couple of weeks now their fans have closely followed the duo. A formidable force behind one of the hottest and best songs titled Monyopi out of BW since the beginning of the year, and it looks set to rock parties and radio chats.
Everything about the song that takes a comical look at some life experiences, from the minute that one hears the first beat of the 5 minute 20 second track, you are in for a ride. On the vocals, Scavenja, born Kabelo Tiro, gives the song a special feel with his voice, and one is immediately drawn to it.
Narrating the birth of Monyopi, DJ Anthem, whose real name is Tshepo Rebabedi, explains that the concept for the song came about last year when they were travelling to Durban for the Durban Music Imbizo. They were on a bus and Scavenger kept using the song Monyopi. Upon arrival in Durban, and in their room, Anthem realised that this could turn into a great song.
He then wrote a few lines, using the word Monyopi to refer to girls who the song is about. In the song they are talking about girls who have turned themselves into parasites, and see business opportunities everywhere including in situations where men think they have find the ideal partner only to later learn that they have not struck gold. In the song, Scavenja says that this type of girls are called by names such as Mmaopena when they are in the village but in the city, they call themselves names such as Miriam, names which he says are suitable for donkeys.
He expressed displeasure with their conduct that he almost wishes that he could engage some underhand tactics and take his revenge on one girl who left him high and dry.
According to DJ Anthem, the song was first recorded sometime in October/November but it took them a while before they could be satisfied with the final product. They had to also make sure that the language used was user friendly, and also had used a language that was trending right now. The song was finally finalised in February with input from the two stars of the song.
The song was produced by Double Impact, who is also behind the hit Follo by Amantle Brown and Juju Boy. He explains that the type of energy that Scavenja possesses is what makes them a force to reckon with. “We are putting a message across about what is happening out there,” he says. He also says that at the moment they are working on merchandise and will be selling t-shirts and caps.
Quizzed on plans for a video, he says that because the song is very big, they want to take their time before they can start thinking about a video. “It is too soon to release a video. We don’t want to release a video while the song is too fresh,” he says, adding that they would consider a video when the demand for the song goes down.
He also notes that they are planning to work on something every week in order to make sure that the song stays in high rotation. “Each week, we will be doing something in order to keep up the hype,” explains Anthem. Fans had a chance to view the dance for the song when the duo recently performed on Flavour Dome.
