Maghebula steals the show at teachers' gala dinner
Talented traditional artist, Alfred Keorete popularly known in the music industry as Maghebula, was a star attraction during Saturday’s Botswana Teachers Union’s gala dinner held at the Botswana Craft.
The event was attended by other public trade unions leaders. Even though it started on a low note, when the Sefhare-born artist took the stage, revellers stood up and sang along him. His popular song Ga go sa thole go ragiwa ka lenao was the song of the night as revellers sang with him until he finished.
The other artist who also mesmerised audience in was Ndingo Jowa with his popular song Pankaka. The elderly man took almost an hour onstage showing off his energetic moves and dance skills. This was the first gala dinner hosted by BTU.
Speaking at the event, guest speaker, Kgosi Mosojane said culture should be a tool for development. “Cultural diversity must be preserved and promoted. As community leaders we are always on the lookout that culture is preserved amongst communities with the help of teachers who are custodians,” said Mosojane adding that it is important as the society to pass culture from one generation to the other.
“It is critical to teach young people the importance of culture at an early stage,” said Mosojane. BTU President Johannes Tshukudu said that as one the country’s oldest trade unions they organised the event because they have realised the importance of culture in society.
Maghebula is currently based in Selibe-Phikwe where he is employed as a soldier with the Botswana Defence Force (BDF). Maghebula’s first album was released in 2009. The two artists performed alongside BTU choir and traditional group.
