Gaborone Youth Singers (GYS) gave choral revellers a treat like no other this past weekend at the Maitisong theatre. The youthful group began their performance with a rendition of Gloria from Mass by Antonio Vivaldi. The GYS ladies, who all wore white dresses, were a marvel to the eye throughout the concert. Their artistry will go a long way unsurpassed, as they brought the songs’ character to life with ease throughout the whole rendition of all opera extracts. The trio of Tshepiso Pati, One Motlhankane and Khumo Kereeditse translated a sombre mood to the audience when they presented Lascia chio pianga, from the works of GF Handel. GYS’s South African based partner soloist Nombuso Ndlandla brought life to the Maitisong auditorium, presenting the French written composition of Je veux vivre by Schubert and Gnoud. The second session of the concert was a showstopper, from the all white regalia, GYS went all black as they presented works from local composers Luka Disho and the late Kgalemang Tumediso Motsete. The latter’s yester-year popular Tsibirobi was given a new interpretation by the group. Choir director Tshepiso Marumo, dripped with sweat as he passionately conducted Bonyedi by Joshua Mohapeloa. The song was given a modernised interpretation than the usual sferzandos that were often attached to it. The last phase of the concert included the awards ceremony where the choir’s longest serving members were awarded certificates. Thereafter, GYS treated the audience to great marabi works complemented by amazing choreography. Ngena Ngonyama was the lerabi of the night.
