Lobatse Clay Works receives P40 million cash injection
There is a glimpse of hope for residents of Lobatse and surrounding areas as systems are in place to re-open Lobatse Clay Works following a financial boost. Operations at the company were halted a few months ago, on the back of allegations of mismanagement. Water, power and phone lines were also cut and some workers were forced to receive salary cuts or go with no pay. But the bricks and paving company recently received a financial injection of nearly P40 million from Botswana Development Corporation (BDC).BDC confirmed that operations at the facility would start following the money injection. Previously BDC had been mum on what was happening at the company. Communications head Boitshwarelo Lebang could only say the business is undergoing transformation following a series of challenges it has faced, including market conditions. During its prime Lobatse Clay Works had a workforce estimated at 500.
