Badminton body descends into chaos
Botswana Badminton Association (BBA) is alleged to have postponed its 2017 Annual General Assembly (AGM) without consent from its affiliates.
This week BG Sport acquired transcripts of social media communication between the BBA leadership and clubs' officials. “We are currently heading for both the Botswana International championships and the Botswana Games in November and December respectively,” reads part of the message purported to be from a BBA committee member. BBA is expected to participate in two events being the Badminton international scheduled from 8th until 18th November while the Botswana Games are pencilled for 14 December.
“This committee failed to deliver over the past two years. The tournament organiser Emmanuel Kgaboetsile resigned from the committee because there was no progress,” lamented a source close to the matter this week. The association currently has five active clubs as members.
The source, which prefers anonymity, said the association managed to organise only one event this year. Kgaboetsile, who is also an international umpire, is currently in Indonesia to officiate at an international competition. “The public is not aware of Kgoboetsile’s exploits which cost him during BNSC awards for referee/ umpire of the year,” said a source this week.
BG Sport this week learnt that the BBA leadership, which has been in office for the past two years, was saved by Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) when affiliate members orchestrated a vote of no confidence on BBA executive committee. According to BG Sport sources, the committee continues to perform poorly especially when it comes to communication and implementation of agreed programs. “The affiliates are never consulted, we just get information on social media.”
Reached for comment, Mudongo conceded that the association failed to communicate developments with affiliates, though he was quick to explain that they called an AGM where constitutional amendments were discussed. According to Mudongo, his office will release the first notice calling the upcoming elective assembly billed for 2nd December 2017.
Meanwhile, BBA international umpire Kgaboetsile who is currently officiating in Indonesia at the world junior Championship has received another invitation to umpire at World Super Series in France on 22nd October. Mudongo has however conceded that their planned tournament did not materialise due to misunderstanding between BBA, BISA and BNSC. However, Mudongo conceded that they did not manage to stick to their 2017 calendar.
