BOSETU to hold its 11th Elective Congress in Palapye
Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) will hold its Elective Congress in Palapye at Majestic Five Hotel from 24th-28th August 2017 under the theme “BOSETU-Championing Educators’ Rights In The Midst Of Collective Bargaining Challenges”.
The objective of the Congress is to elect the Union’s new leadership and introspect on the achievements and challenges facing the Union and to carve a new path towards a brighter future. BOSETU Elective Congress is held every three years. The event will be a memorable one since it will also be an opportunity to celebrate the Union’s thirty year anniversary. Two hundred and ninety delegates from the Union’s twenty regions will be casting election votes in line with the wishes of the Union’s 16000 subscribing members.
This was revealed by the BOSETU Publicity Secretary, Edwin Maitshoko at the Union’s briefing for service providers which was held at the same hotel on Friday. The briefing was meant to meet and share expectations prior to the Congress and to avail each service provider the opportunity to select their working stations.
According to Maitshoko, he said because of the magnitude of the event the Union found it fit to invite only those who excel in their respective crafts to make presentations during the event. Chief among them is Amanda Brown, who will deliver the keynote address. She is the Assistant Secretary General of National Union of Teachers in the United Kingdom and is also a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Governing Board.
Maitshoko added that they were expecting presentations from Professor Roy Du Pre who is the European Union University Teacher Development Advisor, and Professor Mothusi Marobela from the University of Botswana. He further revealed that they will be honoured by the presence of the Minister of Basic Education Unity Dow, the Minister of Tertiary Education Alfred Madigele, and the Minister of Employment and Labour Productivity Tshenolo Mabeo.
As it is the norm with events of such prestige, BOSETU has invited the Association of Non-aligned Teachers Union of Southern Africa (ANTUSA) with member representation from South Africa, Zambia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Moreover, local trade unions and political parties will be present to offer solidarity messages based on the theme of the Congress.
The current National Executive, headed by President Kwenasebele Modukanele, will be dissolved on the 27th August 2017 paving way for elections which will be conducted the following day.
