A 16-year-old girl of Lephaneng ward in Tonota on Monday informed the police that her mother forced her to terminate a pregnancy back in 2021.

According to sources close to the matter, the underage girl fell pregnant sometime in 2021 and in early 2022, the mother realised she was pregnant.

Disappointed and shocked, the mother felt that having to deal with a pregnant 13-year-old, who was at the time, a Standard 7 pupil was too much to handle, resulting in her deciding that they terminate the pregnancy.

The little girl listened to her mother's instructions and after successfully terminating the pregnancy, they buried the foetus in the yard and continued with their lives.

However, early this week and two years later, the young girl did the unexpected - reporting her mother to the police. It is alleged that the daughter reported her mother out of spite as the mother had reprimanded her for sleeping out.

Angry at her mother, the daughter decided to spill the beans to the cops. It is alleged that when questioned by the police, the mother did not deny what she had done two years ago and she was arrested immediately.

The police were allegedly seen at the mother’s yard this week trying to locate where the remains of the foetus were buried.

Head of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Tonota Police Karabo Kgaodi confirmed investigating a case concerning a minor and mother but said it was still too early to share full details.
