Mophato invades Johannesburg
Badimo (ancestors) are smiling down on one of the best contemporary dance troupes to come out of Botswana.
The group in question is none other than Mophato Dance Theatre, who after months of hard work and knocking on doors have clinched an exciting and thrilling opportunity to perform in South Africa. The Afro fusion and contemporary dance company is slated to set the stage on fire on November 30th, until December 3rd.
Having sold out Maitisong Theatre venue, Mophato might do the same thing at the Drama Theatre - State Theatre, one of South Africa’s most sought after theatres. This was revealed a few days ago.
The South African show will see them showcasing and sharing the brilliant Pula, the Musical production. The show previously sold out its shows at Maitisong, on two occasions. The South African audience will experience the beautiful and intricate story of Mmapula, as she embarks on a quest to find life-giving rain and save her beloved village from drought. Pula, the Musical follows the story of a newly-wed young woman, Mmapula, played by the enchanting Palesa Molefe.
Mmapula has a mammoth task of taking over the reins of a rainmaker from her aging father, played by Ntirelang Berman. The story of 'Go roka Pula', takes the audience through the many beautiful dances of Batswana, showing off this ancient method of summoning rain from above through the lands of Basarwa, plains of Mbukushu, Kalanga and other tribes. Other cast members who form the tapestry of the cast include the fluid, and versatile Kalima Mipata, who is the husband of Mmapula.
Other familiar faces include Solly Sebotso and his famous guitar, Gabriel Modise as the Storyteller, Lucky Kwapa, trading by the stage name Moologa as well as Pesalema Motshodi to mention a few. At the time of going to press, Hope Moumakwa, Spokeperson of Mophato Dance Theatre, divulged that they were not ready to talk to the media as they were still finalising a few things. In a previous interview, he had shared that showcasing the production is not cheap with costs estimated at around P600 000.00.
