In a magnificent showcase of its unwavering dedication to diversity and inclusivity, Debswana Diamond Company, a pioneer mining corporation in Botswana, proudly stepped forward to increase sponsorship for the athletes in the disability categories at the momentous 42nd Botswana Sport Awards.

The event, held on 12 August 2023, at the Baisago University in Gaborone, was a collaboration between the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC), the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC), the Department of Broadcasting Services (DBS), and the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport & Culture (MYSC). It is worth noting the significant increase in the value of the awards since Debswana assumed responsibility for this category. Prior to Debswana taking over from another generous sponsor, the prizes stood at P25,000 each. Now, with Debswana's benevolent intervention, the cash prize has tripled to P75,000 per category, serving as a beacon of hope amidst the often challenging landscape of disability. With great zeal, Ms. Rachel Mothibatsela from Debswana took the stage and passionately emphasized that diversity and inclusion have been the very essence of Debswana's corporate ethos.

The company firmly believes that every individual, irrespective of their unique abilities, deserves equal opportunities to engage and excel in their chosen domains. Debswana's sponsorship of the Sportsman with Disability award, was won by Theo Nkele, while the Sportswoman with Disability award was claimed by Neo Gabontshwe.

Each award carried a significant cash prize of P75,000, which goes a long way in promoting and empowering athletes with disabilities. Ms Tebogo Lebotse Sebego, the Vice Chairperson of the BNSC Board, voiced her utmost appreciation for Debswana's ongoing efforts in developing and nurturing the world of sports. She applauded the company for its significant role in the development and growth of various sporting codes in the country. Ms Tebogo Tshenyo, the representative of people with disabilities on the BNSC Board, also expressed her appreciation to Debswana. Debswana's sponsorship of the disability categories at the awards serves as a shining example of their commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The increased value of the awards is a testament to Debswana's dedication to promoting equality and fostering an inclusive sport environment in Botswana. The heartfelt appreciation expressed by representatives of the BNSC further underscores the positive impact of Debswana's involvement in the development of sport in the country. This sponsorship not only supports individual athletes but also sends a powerful message, that everyone deserves equal opportunities to excel and thrive, regardless of their abilities.
