Mom drops baby to death

A one-month-old infant died on Friday in Serowe when its mother, 39, accidentally dropped it and then fell on it!

The case is being probed by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Details of the heart-breaking incident are that the mother was attempting to put the sleeping infant on the mattress and she allegedly dropped the baby on the ground and fell on top of the infant.

The baby could not stop crying from the double impact. That is when the mother took it to hospital, where they were both attended and released the same day. Unfortunately, the next morning the mother realized that the infant was not alive and reported the matter to the police.

Confirming the incident to The Midweek Sun, Assistant Superintendent Eric Dambe for Serowe Police Station said they have received a report and the case has been passed to CID office for investigations.

'The mother reported that she could not see clearly as the room was dark,' Dambe said.

He explained that the family uses a paraffin lamp (Kurwana) and had no money to buy paraffin.

Dambe would not comment on any suspicions of foul play, noting instead that the incident was still fresh and investigations are still ongoing.
