GU completes Mini Stadium

Premiership club, Gaborone United (GU) finds themselves having to shift their attention from erecting their Bokaa project to now fully focusing on building a mini stadium at the Public Service College ground. The eagerly awaited facility which was expected to cost at least 70 million could have long started construction back in 2021 but is still hanging due to issues of the land board.

GU Marketing Manager, Herbert Letsebe said that they are currently busy with building GU mini stadium at the Public Service College because the sporting facility they intended to build at Bokaa is Still on pause because of some road technicalities regarding the road from the main road (A1) to the entrance of the stadium.

“We have a 25 years lease with Botswana Public Service College to build a GU sporting facilities on their ground while we are still waiting for construction of our main stadium at Bokaa,” he emphasised that it is not like they abandoned the construction of Bokaa project. He said that a mini stadium entails of artificial turf, inclusive of permanent and artificial seats that will accommodate about 3,000 people. The Pitch is done, and the construction of offices and permanent stands is halfway done.

“The facility, which is expected to be done in the second week of June, consists of GU offices, gym facility, dressing rooms, host change rooms, showers and toilets. It will have a mini parking inside for VIP’S and outside parking for fans,” he stated. He said that they will be using the stadium for their league games, training and the stadium will also be available for the institution. “Instead of waiting for our big project, we found it necessary to develop our long-term training ground into something that will benefit the club.

However as soon as Bokaa Stadium is complete, the mini stadium will be used by the ladies' teams,” Letsebe stated. He said the erection of the mini stadium will benefit them in the long run because they also intend to build boundary walls that they will later turn into advertising platforms. “Hopefully, we will do official opening on the 10th of June this year where we will be hosting the annual Zac ladies tournament, involving four invited teams,” he said. Gaborone United Director and successful businessperson, Nicolas Zakhem, confirmed that they are in the process of constructing their massive project in Bokaa and as soon as they settle the pending works with the Land board, they will go ahead with their plan. Even though it seems like the project will take a long time to complete, Zakhem is certain that the project will be successful.

“There is no how we can abandon the construction of Bokaa facility, however at the moment, we are building a mini stadium while we are still waiting to go ahead with our long team project at Bokaa,” Zakhem stated.
