Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) National Executive Committee (NEC) has set the deadline for all the party’s representatives in Parliament and Councils who would like to contest the upcoming elections under the UDC to indicate interest by May 31.

UDC leader Duma Boko revealed that the UDC has appointed two NEC members - Dr. Patrick Mmolotsi and Dr. Phillip Mbulawa - to represent the party in negotiation talks with the Alliance for Progressives (AP).

Boko noted this week, following a resolution by the UDC that he would address the nation at least once a month, that the UDC is a growing coalition that seeks to draw from the unique history and experiences of each constituent party.

He noted that the UDC is under no illusion of the fact that coalition politics has its challenges. However, he noted that the challenges they face will not deter them, further urging opposition parties in Africa to embrace the coalition model.

Boko speaks of the hardships of the masses. He notes that many people have to survive on a healthcare system that is poor.

“The facilities of many of our healthcare system are dilapidated,” Boko said, adding that society lives in a generalised trauma of losing loved ones to the healthcare system. “Ga o sa itse monko wa loso, tsamaya o ye Princess Marina,” Boko said, emphasising that it is time for regime change as the lives of the masses are going down the drain.

Boko said their plans entail developing a national health insurance scheme that will ensure that all have quality healthcare. He applauded the efforts of health workers across the nation, as they are facing a huge task of helping people with the little resources at their disposal.

Boko spoke of the violent crimes that have risen over the last years in Botswana. He noted that the message of the UDC speaks of the shared hope of Batswana. Further, that poverty that is ravaging the nation is done on purpose, citing that household debt of the nation is at around P60 billion.

“The thumping victories that the UDC has embraced in the recent by-elections indicate that the people have rejected all other distractions or diversions,” he said, adding that this is an indicator to all that the UDC’s politics is above par.
