The first edition of world athletics continental tour gold, First National Bank (FNBB) Botswana Golden Grand Prix, track and field event which ended over the weekend have been declared a success by Meet organizer and founder of Golden Sports agency, Glody Dube. Speaking after the event on Sunday, Dube said that the event has served its purpose by providing a platform for both upcoming and elite athletes to compete and showcase their talent at a higher level. He said this will meaningfully assist them in preparing and qualifying for major track and field events such as World Athletics Championships to be held in Budapest later in this year.

“I’m grateful that we had thousands of people watching the show from the stadium and millions around the world. The support shown by Batswana and international supporters in this first ever continental tour gold was awesome, this is a great seed we have sown as a country and collectively, we can continue to make athletics in the country grow beyond its imaginable potential,” Dube said. Formally known as Gaborone International Meet, this year, the event was rebranded as FNBB Golden Grand Prix.

The event has been held annually since 2011, save for 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19. In 2023, it was awarded golden status by world athletics, making it the most prestigious track and field event to be hosted in Botswana. The organizers of the event then partnered with the government of Botswana, Confederation of African athletics (CAA), Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC), Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC), Botswana Athletics Association (BAA), Sports View Runners Club (SVRC), and financial sponsors to host the world class event.

“The event this year brought together over 200 competing athletes from around the world and was broadcast live across 150 countries and our spectators had a privilege to witness internationally acclaimed athletes such as Ferdinand Omanyala, Twinisha Terry, Letsile Tebogo, Ese Brune, Arone Brown, Kirani James, and Issac Makwala among many others,” Dube elaborated. Dube has also announced that the next edition of the Botswana Golden Grand Prix will be on the 27th of April 2024. Although the National Stadium was not filled to capacity, the crowd was impressive for the first ever event, and the response from the supporters was amazing.
