POTHOLE NIGHTMARE: Heavy rains wreak havoc on roads
Mogoditshane/Thamaga Sub District Council has resorted to filling the potholes along the Mogoditshane-Gabane road with gravel as a temporary measure.
The heavy rains witnessed this past weekend left the road in deplorable conditions.
The situation was so bad that traffic jammed for hours along the Mogoditshane-Gabane road for the entire Monday morning.
The Botswana Police Service was even forced to intervene, deciding to allow only one lane of cars to pass, close it and open the other lane.
Most drivers were left with no choice but to abandon the tarred road for the muddy and bumpy roads as alternative routes. Being stuck in traffic for more than an hour meant that many would arrive at their workplaces late.
“We will be using gravel to fill the holes up and then use road patching material tomorrow (Tuesday). We are equally worried and have seen how bad the road is,” said Sub Council Senior Assistant Council Secretary Losika Mosarwa.
Mosarwa said they had noticed how bad the situation was and can only sympatisise with drivers.
On Tuesday, some potholes were yet to be attended to and Mosarwa explained that they experienced some delays as the holes were just too many.
Asked when the long promised new dual carriageway project of the Mogoditshane-Gabane road will start, Mosarwa said only the Department of Roads can answer better.
At press time, the Department of Roads had not responded to questions on the matter, but had indicated back in 2019, that the project would start in the same year. At one point, it was even reported that the tender was awarded.
When making deliberations about his constituency in parliament a few weeks back, Member of Parliament (MP) for Gabane- Mmankgodi Constituency Kagiso Mmusi was told by minister responsible for roads Thulaganyo Segokgo that the project has stalled but will be done during the current financial year.
