Goitsenna Kagiso (34) from Gumare shot his girlfriend’s aunt, Makere Sarefo (72) and later shot himself. The man died from his own gunshot having initially gone all out to the house of his girlfriend, Kapangu Motama's (31) aunt, to kill the lover instead. All this is said to have happened in the dark on Sunday night, after which the killer fled the scene.

One of the deceased woman’s children, Gotlhophamang Katawa (30), told The Midweek Sun that it was just after 8pm on Sunday when she received a call from her cousin while in church, telling her that her mother had just been shot dead and that she had to rush home.

On arrival, Katawa's younger siblings told her that their mother was just standing there with them when she suddenly fell to the ground following the gunshot and some verbal spats that happened under the cover of darkness. Everything happened so fast, they said, they could not see the killer.

It turns out, according to Katawa, that the killer had a tendency of going to her mother’s house looking for his girlfriend, Kapangu, whenever he could not find her at her house. He had allegedly told the girlfriend that he would kill her.

The troubled couple lived together in Maun before separating and had many cases of assault reported to the police and elders because of the abuse in the relationship.

She added that at some point the police advised them to go their separate ways to avoid violence, but Kagiso would not have it. “Kagiso had sent Kapangu a message that day, enquiring about her whereabouts, and threatened that he would kill her. After she received the text, Kapangu told her parents, who would later ask her to join them at the cattle post to escape the threat. The parents had just left for the cattle post to spend the Easter holidays,” Katawa said.

Katawa said her mother’s death has affected her and other siblings badly, further stating that her mother was the only person assisting them with their children.

Katawa noted that funeral arrangements were underway and and that the mother of six will be laid to rest this weekend in Etsha 6.

Gumare Police Station Commander, Chenamo Orateng told The Midweek Sun in an interview that they received a report on Sunday evening that a man had shot a woman at Mabudutsa ward in Etsha 6.

According to reports, the deceased man had gone to the house of his girlfriend’s aunt to look for her and when he discovered that she was not there, he became angrier and uneasy, further asking about her whereabouts.

“The now deceased girlfriend‘s aunt responded by telling him that his girlfriend (Kapangu) does not stay in the yard and they did not know where she was,” Orateng narrated.

According to Orateng, the man then pulled the trigger and shot the woman on the neck, leaving family members reeling in shock. The woman was then rushed to Gumare Primary Hospital where she was certified dead.

Orateng said it appears that after the fatal shooting, the man drove off in his car after which a police search ensued. He was found the following day on Monday.

Unfortunately, when the police arrived at his hiding place in Legonono ward, he pulled the trigger and shot himself in the head while in his car. He was rushed to Gumare primary hospital where he was certified dead.
