Man kills her lover in front of her child, burns her body
When The Midweek Sun team arrived at the family home in Moshupa, it was already late in the afternoon. The mood was noticeably sombre. Mourners had already gathered and the family was getting ready to go and fetch the corpse from Kanye.
“Her remains are being picked from Kanye and have to be buried today (Friday), this is why we are running around before it gets dark,” One’s Uncle Sekgoa Gare, explained.
Gare said they were told by the police last Tuesday night that it was suspected that One had been killed and her body burnt by her boyfriend in Modimela ward, on the other side of Moshupa village.
They heard that One’s boyfriend Bakang Mothogaesi was seen burning carpets and mattress in the yard and the stench that came out of the burning items made some people suspicious.
While still trying to understand what the boyfriend was burning that smelt awful, smoke came out of the windows suggesting that something was also burning from inside the house.
People began gathering but Bakang allegedly warned them not to come anywhere near his house. The police were called and that it is how it was discovered that what was burning inside the house was a human being.
He had put One’s body in a bath tub and her head and legs were left hanging outside the tub. He then set fire on her.
“Only the head and legs did not burn to ashes but were left charred. There is actually no body, what is left is just bones that easily break when you touch them,” a devastated Gare said.
To this day, they do not know why Bakang killed One in such a barbaric way.
The uncle said that One had been living with her boyfriend Bakang at his place together with their 8-month old baby.
One's mother died when One was still a baby hence she was left in the care of her grandmother.
“Soon after giving birth, One went to live with her boyfriend. The child is still very young and we hear allegations that she was killed in full view of her baby.
“It seems he killed her on Saturday or Sunday, he stayed inside the house with One's dead body until Tuesday when he was seen burning items.
“It is alleged that in those few days, Bakang was seen sending some boys to the nearby tuck shop to get him milk for the baby, we guess the little one was hungry,” Gare continued.
Moshupa station commander, David Ramoseki confirmed that Bakang was arrested last week Tuesday and was arraigned before court Thursday morning and has been remanded in custody.
WHO IS BAKANG
The family of Bakang was not willing to share anything about one of their own especially the murder incident. Bakang’s aunt and uncle washed their hands clean off the matter, saying they have nothing to say as they are equally shocked like anyone else.
“We know nothing, we just got called like anyone else to find that Bakang is alleged to have killed his girlfriend,” they said.
According to residents of Moshupa, Bakang is the son of a former police officer, his mother is alleged to have died a few years ago.
“The mother left him the house he was living in with his girlfriend. We are not sure what got into him but the family knows that he once threatened to kill that girl,” some of the neighbours said.
They are disappointed by what Bakang has done, noting that his mother spent money sending him abroad, thinking she was investing in her child’s education.
“He studied in Canada. It is suspected that the guy was probably on drugs,” one neighbour said.
