The case in which the Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST) and its employee who is a BOSETU shop steward are fighting over the disciplinary hearing process is likely to sow seeds of discord within the BOSETU camp.

BOSETU is fighting for their BIUST shop steward facing a charge of leaking the institution’s confidential information. Some of BOSETU leaders are f the view that the manner in which some union leaders are fighting BIUST leader is likely to jeopardize relations.

“Some of the allegations raised have not been proven but have far reaching implications on those subjects. Our view was that we should work on brokering peace than the radical route because our client does have a case to answer. One of our other worry was that fighting BIUST like this may jeopardize relations between the union and the institution and while we recognize our responsibility to fight for our members, we must also consider the union’s interests as a partner in workers development. Now it’s like we have something to hide because we are jumping the gun,” revealed an insider at BOSETU.

Unions, he said, should also be agents of peace and not instigate disharmony because employees still need to fend for their families and ruining their future through fanning the fires may not be ideal.

BUIST employee will be going for the disciplinary hearing soon on accusations of leaking the institution’s confidential information. The Union has instead launched an attack on the BIUST Vice Chancellor accusing him of corruption.
