Kweneng council suspends 7 employees over corruption claims
Controversy has once again engulfed Kweneng District Council (KwDC) after seven employees from different departments were suspended indefinitely on allegations of corruption.
The suspensions follow the arrest of one officer by law enforcement agencies. Insiders link the matter to fraudulent issuance of operational, commercial and environmental licences, with claims that some employees accepted bribes from businesses.
Sources say the council acted after receiving a tip-off, though investigations took time as more information was gathered. Efforts to reach Council Secretary Olebile Mafala for comment were unsuccessful.
KwDC has long struggled with administrative controversies, including clashes between its political and administrative wings.
Employees and councillors have previously petitioned the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, demanding Mafala’s transfer or investigation, citing maladministration, abuse of power and flawed financial procedures.
The latest suspensions deepen concerns about corruption and governance at one of Botswana’s largest councils.
