Panic and fear spread among Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church youths attending a Pathfinder Boot Camp in Kang in the early hours of Sunday morning, after the discovery of an 11-year-old boy lying motionless in his tent.

The week-long camp, which began on Monday, was expected to end on the tragic Sunday as campers prepared to return to their respective homes and churches.

However, the final morning turned tragic when fellow campers realised that one of their own from Kanye was unresponsive.

The boy, who had been sleeping alone in his tent, was found motionless as others prepared to depart. The matter was reported to the police, who responded and rushed him to the hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, Kang Station Commander, Superintendent Solomon Lesedi, said preliminary findings suggest the child may have suffered a medical episode during the night.

“He slept alone in his tent, and it is believed he had a medical condition he was living with. At this stage, we suspect that he may have experienced an attack which he did not survive,” Lesedi said.

He added that there are no indications of foul play.

“We do not suspect any criminal involvement. It is a very painful incident, especially considering the age of the child. It is not something we usually encounter,” he said.

The camp was held about 10 kilometres south of Kang and had brought together young people for what is usually a spiritually enriching and socially engaging experience.

Pathfinder camps, organised by the SDA Church, are youth development programmes designed for children aged between 10 and 15. The camps combine outdoor activities with spiritual growth, teaching practical skills such as

tent pitching, fire building and cooking.

They also promote teamwork, discipline and community service within a structured environment. For many attendees, the camps are an opportunity to learn, socialise and strengthen their faith.

The loss has left both children and organisers in shock. Some parents and church members expressed sorrow over the incident, describing it as a devastating end to a joyful gathering.

Police investigations and medical examinations are continuing to establish the exact cause of death.
