RETRACTION AND CLARIFICATION TO MEDIA HOUSES ON THE BOTSWANA MONEY LAUNDERING AND TERRORISM FINANCING NATIONAL RISK ASSESSMENT (NRA)

The Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) hereby issues a formal retraction in respect of its earlier press communication circulated to media houses regarding the Botswana Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing National Risk Assessment (NRA).

The NRA is a national, multi-sectoral assessment covering multiple sectors, including the Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs) regulated by the Authority. It is developed through a collaborative national process involving designated stakeholders, including supervisory and competent authorities, law enforcement agencies, and relevant private sector entities.

Accordingly, the NRA was not developed or produced by the Authority. It is a national document coordinated by the AML/CFT/CPF National Coordination Office housed at the Ministry of Finance.

The Authority urges media houses to accurately state in future reporting that the NRA is a national report issued by the Government of Botswana, and not an NBFIRA publication.

The Authority further notes that its role is limited to the dissemination of the NRA to regulated entities within the Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFI) sector to support awareness and understanding of the identified risks.
