Healthy Lifestyle
In the heart of Gaborone's Block 6, where daily life pulses with energy, access to essential healthcare remains a pressing challenge. Third-year Bachelor of Nursing students at the University of Botswana are spearheading, ‘Health Pitso: Community First, Health Always’ as part of the Community Health Nursing programme. This hands-on initiative involves a thorough community assessment, pinpointing priority health issues, and crafting targeted interventions to make a real difference.
The assessment revealed a stark gap: Block 6 lacks a dedicated primary healthcare clinic. Residents rely on a secondary-level facility focused primarily on diabetes and psychiatric services, forcing many to trek long distances to Phase 2, Block 8, and Block 9 for routine check-ups, screenings, and preventive care. This inaccessibility has fueled low screening rates and a surge in undiagnosed conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and other preventable illnesses.
‘Health Pitso’ steps in as a vibrant one-day outreach event set for 21 April 2026 at Pula Spar in Block 6. Designed to bring primary healthcare directly to doorsteps, it emphasizes prevention, early detection, and community empowerment.
Attendees will enjoy free, expert services including: - Blood pressure, blood sugar, and BMI screenings - Cancer screening and health education - HIV and STI testing - Substance abuse education - Medication guidance and counselling
Other than screenings, ‘Health Pitso’ also fosters genuine dialogue, allowing residents to voice healthcare concerns and shape future planning and advocacy.
Representative of this initiative, Kato Gare noted that this platform unites partners, including the Office of the Honourable Member of Parliament for Gaborone Bonnington North Constituency, Hon. Maipelo Mophuting-Dikoloti who is also the Assistant Minister of State President for Security and Defence; BOFWA; the Cancer Association; Letsile Foundation; Narcotics Police; Diagnofirm; Neo Health; and Stockfort Health. They will deliver specialized expertise, education, and on-site screenings.
Ultimately, Health Pitso delivers more than immediate care, it equips Block 6 with vital knowledge, encourages lifelong health-seeking habits, and spotlights the critical need for a permanent primary clinic. The community is invited to join on 21 April to prioritize wellness, one step at a time.
