Local businessman Bakang Seretse was taken before the Broadhurst Magistrate’s Court in a child maintenance dispute after the mother of his seven-year-old child alleged that he stopped providing financial support in March 2024.

Appearing before Magistrate Mpho Setshegetso this Monday, the applicant, Gorata Ratau,33, told the court that Seretse has failed to maintain their child for over a year, prompting her to seek legal intervention.

Ratau, a financial administrator at Gaborone International School (GIS), told the court that she had met with Seretse and his parents last week in an effort to resolve the dispute amicably.

“After the discussion with him and his family, I wish to withdraw the matter as Seretse said we will settle the issue outside court,” she said.

Presiding Magistrate Mpho Setshegetso granted the applicant’s request to withdraw the application. The matter was subsequently dismissed.

In February 2024, Seretse lost an appeal case in which he sought access to his assets, estimated at P82 million, seized by the state pending investigations into the alleged missing funds from the National Petroleum Fund (NPF).
