Elderly man seeks Court protection from daughter’s abusive partner
An elderly man, Leslie Modise, appeared before the Village Magistrate Court this Tuesday seeking a restraining order against his daughter’s partner, Hilton Tjiwandira (45).
Modise described Tjiwandira as a persistent threat to his family, particularly his daughter, Chedza Peba (36), and two grandchildren.
Residing between Pitsane and Gaborone, Modise recounted harrowing experiences of abuse and fear, alleging that Tjiwandira - known for heavy drinking - often arrives home intoxicated, hurling insults and assaulting his daughter.
He recalled a particularly alarming incident in July 2025, when Tjiwandira allegedly set fire to his Gaborone home while his daughter and grandchildren were inside. They were rescued just in time by another family member.
Despite the severity of the incident, Modise said his daughter has been reluctant to press charges or involve the police.
He stressed the emotional and psychological toll on the household, saying, “We no longer feel safe or free in our own home. The children are constantly exposed to unruly behaviour. This man insults us, threatens us, and we live in fear every day.”
Magistrate Tshepo Thedi ordered that Tjiwandira be served with court papers and appear to respond to the allegations. The matter has been scheduled for mention on 4 December 2025, where both sides will be heard before the court determines appropriate measures to safeguard Modise and his family.
