BCP goes South of Botswana
The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) intends to hit the ground running to grow its presence in the Southern part of the country.
The party president and Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Dumelang Saleshando revealed this week that the party wants to revive its footprint in the south of the country.
“We want to commit our energies and resources to grow our presence in the southern part of the country. Out of the 15 parliamentary seats we secured during the 2024 general elections, only two seats are from the South. That is if we use Dibete Gate as a political demarcation,” Saleshando told the media on Tuesday this week.
According to the BCP leader, their performance during the 2024 general elections show that the party is not entirely rejected by the voters in the southern part.
He revealed that the BCP will participate and field candidates in any by-election between now and the coming 2029 general elections.
“We will be starting with the upcoming Kgalagadi South by-election. We have deployed our foot-soldiers there for the campaign. In 2019 and 2024 we were not in the ballot. This is one of the far south constituencies in the country.
We are the main opposition and we have to show that we are the alternative government,” said Saleshando, who is also the Member of Parliament for Maun North.
The BCP leader added that they are preparing themselves to usher Batswana an alternative government in the event that Batswana feel that the current government has failed them.
He stressed that in most of the constituencies in the southern part of the country, there is no political party that can claim dominance.
'As the main opposition we will contest in any by-election. Let there be no doubt. BCP will contest whether we have been there before or not. We are going in and will ensure we sell our brand”, the BCP President said.
As a member of the BCP Central Committee, and party’s Information and Publicity Secretary, Prof Mpho Pheko will be the campaign manager in the Kgalagadi South by-election billed for November 15 2025.
As part of its campaign, the BCP will also hold a leadership seminar in Tsabong on the 1st of November 2025 where the party will also scrutinise the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government electoral promises since assuming power on the 1st of November 2024.
