The Botswana Netball Association has made a strategic move to boost the performance of its senior women's national team, by appointing experienced South African netball coach Martha Mosoahle-
Samm as the new head coach. Mosoahle-Samm brings a strong coaching pedigree, having previously served as an assistant coach for the South African SPAR Proteas and coached the South African FAST5 national team, in addition to leading the Free State Crinums to domestic success in the Telkom Netball League.
This appointment, which came into effect recently, is a direct response to the association's ambitious long-term goal, securing qualification for the Netball World Cup 2027 in Sydney, Australia. With the World Cup qualifiers scheduled for Kenya in 2026 and only four African slots available, BONA sought Mosoahle-Samm's expertise to help the team reclaim a competitive position in African netball.
Having been with the team for two months, Mosoahle-Samm and her assistants, are currently intensifying preparations for major upcoming international tournaments, including a Test Series and the Africa Netball Championship in Malawi. These events are crucial stepping stones to evaluate the team's progress and readiness for the high-stakes World Cup qualification campaign.
Mosoahle-Samm has expressed strong confidence in the national talent pool after overseeing the team selection process during the recent national trials. Having been with the squad for two months, Mosoahle-Samm stated that Botswana possesses a wealth of netball talent, and the players are highly motivated and determined to compete effectively on the international stage.
She emphasized that the primary focus of her initial two months has been conducting intensive training camps, aimed at rigorously preparing the team for the upcoming international competitions and setting a solid foundation for their ultimate goal, qualifying for the 2027 Netball World Cup. 'These early camps are not just physical training, but are crucial opportunities to cultivate a competitive mindset and elevate the team's ability to challenge top African nations,' she stated.
The senior ladies national netball team is currently immersed in an ongoing training camp in Jwaneng, generously sponsored by the Debswana Mining Company, as they intensify preparations for the upcoming international schedule. Their immediate focus is the Africa Cup in December 2025, a crucial tournament where they aim to measure their progress against continental rivals. To date, the team has successfully completed a test series as part of their evaluation process, with the coach looking ahead to arranging more competitive matches to further hone the players' skills and match readiness before the major continental challenge.
