13 pre-schools shut down in Kgatleng
Kgatleng District Council has ordered the closure of 13 pre-schools and daycare centres that were found operating without licenses. The move follows inspections by the Department of Social and Community Development, which revealed that the centres were not compliant with regulations set under the Early Childhood Care and Education Policy of 2001 and the Botswana Children’s Act of 2009.
Among those shut down are Omega Day Care, Little Saints English Medium Pre-School and Day Care, Motswedi Rehabilitation Centre, Mochudi Resource Stimulation Centre for the Blind, Marea Moagi Day Care Centre, Hanahai Pre-School, Polka Dot Nursery School in Artesia, Founders Academy in Matebele, Beulah Land Preschool and Academy in Oodi, Cotton Rose Nursery School, Priesthood Day Care Centre, Spring Bells Pre-School, and Early Bird English Medium Nursery and Pre-School.
The council explained that unlicensed centres pose risks since they may not have fire safety clearance, proper hygiene standards, qualified teaching staff, or valid land-use permits. They also pointed out that some centres did not provide structured daily programmes or balanced meal plans as required.
However, not all schools faced closure. Several centres were found to be compliant with licensing requirements and were cleared to continue operating. These schools had secured the necessary permits, staff medical reports, teaching credentials, and meal plans that meet government standards.
Parents in Kgatleng have been urged to enrol their children only in licensed institutions to ensure safety and proper learning environments. The council further encouraged operators of closed centres to address the gaps and reapply for licenses so they can reopen in line with the law.
