Jealousy Turns Deadly With Serowe Man Accused of Killing Romantic Rival
A 25-year-old man appeared before the Serowe Magistrate Court on Tuesday, charged with the murder of a 27-year-old man he suspected of having an affair with his girlfriend.
Serowe Station Commander Superintendent Poloko Oteng said the incident occurred on the night of August 30, 2025, at Mohese cattle post near Serowe.
The two men reportedly clashed at a local bar, where the suspect allegedly struck the victim with a blunt object. The injured man was rushed to Sekgoma Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The suspect was arrested shortly after and formally charged with murder.
Oteng expressed concern over rising violent crimes in the Serowe policing area, noting that three murder cases were recorded in August alone. He urged residents to resolve conflicts peacefully and seek help from authorities or mediators.
'Murder incidents in my policing area are worrisome. I urge people to always seek interventions whenever they have misunderstandings,' Oteng said.
He advised couples to manage jealousy and emotional disputes with maturity, stressing that no relationship disagreement is worth a life.
'Murder over jealousy is a growing concern in our communities. I urge people to seek counselling, family intervention, or even legal assistance when they feel overwhelmed in their relationships,' Oteng said.
He added that emotions, especially when fuelled by alcohol or mistrust, often cloud judgment and lead to irreversible actions.
The case has been adjourned to September 9, 2025, for further investigations. The suspect remains in custody pending his next court appearance.
