Cop commits suicide after brutal attack and rape on ex-girlfriend
A Police Special Constable stationed in Selibe Phikwe allegedly raped and stabbed his ex-girlfriend before fleeing the scene and later taking his own life.
The officer, identified as 30-year-old Modiri Kwafela of Mmadinare, is said to have gone to the woman’s home in Phikwe.
According to those close to the matter, a misunderstanding erupted after the 37-year-old woman tried to end the relationship for good.
When she attempted to turn him away, Kwafela allegedly launched a brutal attack. He is accused of stabbing her several times and raping her before fleeing the house.
Believing she was dead, Kwafela took her vehicle, drove it near Mmadinare, set it alight, and disappeared into the night. Hours later, his lifeless body was discovered hanging from a tree by passers-by.
Neighbours who heard the woman’s screams rushed to her aid and found her bleeding but still alive. She was rushed to the hospital, where she is currently recovering.
Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner, Near Bagali, confirmed investigating the incident, describing it as unfortunate, especially coming from someone entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the nation.
“We are investigating the case. The man is suspected to have committed suicide, while the victim is currently recuperating in the hospital,” he said.
The tragedy has left both the Selibe Phikwe and Mmadinare communities reeling in shock. Many expressed disbelief at Kwafela’s actions, describing him as a humble and cheerful young man.
He was also well-known as the lead member of the St John Silver Brass Band, where he was admired for his musical talent and leadership.
Kwafela was buried in Mmadinare on Sunday.
