Youthpreneur Challenge launches to tackle unemployment
At 45.4 percent, youth unemployment remains one of Botswana’s most urgent socio-economic challenges. In response, many young people have turned to small and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) and informal “side hustles” to survive. Yet, despite their resilience, most face barriers such as limited access to training, mentorship, funding, and platforms to scale their ideas.
To address these challenges, the Office of the Member of Parliament for Gaborone Bonnington North, Maipelo Mophuting, in collaboration with Market Players, has launched the annual GBN Youthpreneur Challenge. More than a competition, the nine-month programme offers training, mentorship, and seed funding to empower young innovators and aspiring business owners within the constituency.
Speaking at the launch, Mophuting called the initiative a historic step toward transforming lives and reshaping Bonnington North’s economic story. She thanked partners including LEA, De Beers, Abari Comms, Botswana Family Welfare Association, and SEZA, saying their support reflects a shared commitment to youth empowerment.
Quoting Ecclesiastes 11:6, Mophuting likened the programme to sowing seeds of opportunity. “With mentorship, resources, and training, these seeds will grow into sustainable businesses that create jobs and wealth,” she said. She added that the challenge is about cultivating innovation and long-term independence, not offering temporary relief.
Under the programme, 35 youth entrepreneurs will receive intensive training and mentorship, culminating in a live pitching event where seven finalists will each receive a minimum of P100,000 in funding. Senior Administration Officer Otsile Pule said support will continue beyond the competition to ensure sustainability.
Mophuting described the challenge as a practical manifestation of hope and urged youth to dream boldly and build businesses that create lasting legacies.
